How often should a chimney be swept?

Once a year for a fireplace or wood heater used through winter, ideally before you light the first fire of the season. If you burn most nights, or you burn unseasoned wood, creosote builds faster and a mid-season sweep is worth booking.

What is creosote and why does it matter?

Creosote is the tarry residue left when wood smoke cools on the way up the flue. It is flammable. Once it builds into a thick layer, a hot fire or a stray ember can ignite it inside the chimney, which is how most chimney fires start.

Do you sweep from inside the house or from the roof?

Most sweeps are done from inside, at the fireplace opening, with rotary rods pushed up the flue. Roof access is used when the flue design calls for it and the roof can be worked on safely. We decide once we have seen the setup.

What should I do to prepare for the visit?

Let the fire go cold for at least 24 hours, clear ornaments and rugs from the hearth, and leave a clear path to the fireplace. We cover the surrounding floor and furniture ourselves before any work starts.

Do you sweep wood heater flues as well as open fireplaces?

Yes. We sweep open fireplaces, freestanding and inbuilt wood heaters, and their flues. The method changes with the appliance, and rotary brushing is used where a straight brush cannot follow the bends.

When is the best time of year to book a chimney sweep?

Late summer and autumn. The flue is dry, availability is easier than in the middle of winter, and any repair the inspection turns up can be sorted before you need the fire.
